Writing Showcase

We had to write three different paragraphs or parts of writing for a Writing Showcase. We put a url on the doc to show that we have finished our three pieces of writing. These are my three pieces of writing.

WALT: Use a wide variety of adjectival and adverbial phrases to clearly convey meaning.

How

When

1st:Early in the morning, I run fast like a fully charged race car which goes up and down the tall, steep hills. I slowly sniffed up a chunk of minty fragrance. My nose whifts up the smell of peppermint. Smells of peppermint waft everywhere, fresh, fresh. The devine smell whirls around the trees like swirling ice cream. While big tall trees make a bridge over the top of me, I feel a surge of pleasure rushing through my body.  I looked to the right and see a muddy dirt path. It has a mix of stones and mud. Mud, slimy, slimy, mud. These words ring through my head like a bell on a door. Then I realize this is the amazing bike track that I use for sleading in the winter. It looks very different at this time of year. When the leaves are growing strong, the flowers start to bloom and blossom in the fresh new morning.

2:"Sunny why are you playing, fiddling and making shapes with the dentists stuff? What are you doing looking under Sunny's dress Callum? Your scared. Well, I want you to get out of the dress now. Girls need some privacy. Oh dear, Lili what were you doing outside the door? You got lost outside! Oh dear, well I'm just lucky that I didn't loose you. I am very sorry about all the fuss over these children. They just won't listen sometimes. I will try to keep them under control. Which child would you like to see first dentist? who is called... Oh, that right Mia? That was a very good choice. Ok Lili jump up onto the seat please. No Lili,I didn't mean keep on jumping on the seat, why you ask. You might break the seat. I don't care if you like it! Just sit on the seat. Don't you dear try it to Callum. Callum Wait hold on a second Callum. Sunny put the drill down. No way are you going to use that on someone's teeth."

3:She has got curly brown hair that goes down to her shoulders. Rosalind likes to wear her hair down a lot. Her eye’s are greenish goldy and they sparkle when she is happy. Her nose is medium sized and it is curvy too. The mouth of Rosalind's is medium and her teeth are white like snow on a mountain. She loves wearing t-shirts also shorts. Her favourite top is a orange and white striped top which has a little orange bow on one side of the top. She also loves wearing bare feet. Rosalind Says proudly, "I like to wear bare feet." She loves animals. Rosalind cares for animals. Her favourite animal is a horse who will canter fast in the morning breeze. She is very kind to animals. Rosalind is kind, caring and never gives up. When people are hurt she will go help them. She will say, "Are you all right!" I think Rosalind is a great friend to have. Her favourite toys is a sausage dog that sits, rolls over and who's best friends is Teatop The Turtle.

Athletics Goals

Today I had to make up some athletics goals that I could work on. I have got three goals and I put how I could get better at them.

Thursday 25 September 2014

2 Stars 1 Wish

Here is my 2 stars and 1 wish. We had to do 2 things that we were proud of and 1 thing that we could work on.

Inquiry Sample

WALT:  gather information

Description:

Elly (Art)- Every Wednesday we have been learning about the inquiry process while finding out about art from around the world. The first stage of an inquiry is to gather information - ‘Get It’. First we chose a culture we wanted to find out more about and then started researching.

Criteria:

Matrix showing what you think and what your inquiry teacher thinks.

Get It, Sort It, Use It Model

Evaluation:

1. What are you most proud of? I am most proud of  gathering up my information because I wouldn't have a finished art piece.

2. What did you find challenging? Finding a range of sources to find information but I got there in the end.

3.  My next ‘Get It’ goal is? I can locate and get information from a range of sources and show how it links to the topic. I reflect, dialogue and question the information.

Reading Sample

Reading Workshop 14 Reading portfolio sample T3

My reading goal this term was analysing

WALT

GET IT...use a range of sources by questioning and predicting

SORT IT...analyse and sort information to answer my question: see if my thinking has changed, look for patterns by questioning inferring, summarising

USE IT…discuss what I have found out with others and make connections

Task

inquiring readers go through a process to gather, organise and respond to new information. We have been using  the ‘GET IT, SORT IT, USE IT’ process. After reading ‘Wonder’ by R.J.Palaccio our group felt moved to DO something but we didn’t know what! We all had lots of questions so we decided to research more about disabilities before deciding. I wanted to know more about:

Schools for learners with disabilities

SUCCESS CRITERIA

I can research using different sources.
I can think logically, creatively, and reflectively.
I can make generalisations from patterns and connections.

Did my thinking change or stay the same during the ‘GET IT’ stage? My thinking changed because you have got to think in different ways to be a good learner.

From ‘SORTING IT’ I can make these generalisations: A person called Frida Cahlo was a renowned Mexican painter who created striking paintings. Disabilities are normal to people with a disability but a person without a disability does not feel the same way.

‘USE IT’ (what did you do- those who did a social action, or what could you have done for this stage- for those who didn't?) Rosalind and I have created a speech to change people's mind about what disabilities are and are like.

Writing Sample

WALT:  Entertain

My writing goal this term was to use a variety of simple, complex, and compound sentences

SUCCESS CRITERIA

I have used a variety of simple, complex and compound sentences to build interest and suspense.

Structure I have organised and sequenced my ideas into paragraphs for purpose and effect.

TASK: craft a free-choice piece of writing that shows how I am developing my goal

Draft: The air smelt of peppermint everyday. Ben could here the sweetytop bird calling him to come this way. The bird was called sweetytop because you could eat it, the bird was sweet like a lollie pop and it tasted really nice. Ben walked towards the bird slowly. He could here the bird humbing along as his wings flapped up and down.

Ben had been walking with the bird since day light. Ben was tired and wanted a rest. He lay on some hay that he found in the forest and went to sleep.
Ben got up very early in the morning because he had a job to do. The bird was still there, the sweetytop greeted Ben in a very lovely way.

Ben followed the bird and then the path turned into gravel and stony rock. This is the path that leads all the way to the crystals. The bird left with a happy goodbye.
Benjamin was half way when he came to the grumpy old troll. He was a grumpy troll. He wore a long cloak to camouflage himself into the dark leaves. He was obsessed with chocolate. He liked any tipe of chocolate that was for sure. I tried to sneak past him but he saw me. I was terrified. I couldn't move an inch my body, I was trembling because he was holding a NIFE. I ran across and over to the other side of the bridge. He followed me he said, "Give me some chocolate!" I said back annoyed, "but that is my only piece of food. The troll held up his nife. I gave him the chocolate and ran for my life."My life is over." I say as I lye down. I feel ants crawling over me as my eyes shut. They start biting my skin as the go into flesh. This was the end of my life at least I thought that. Suddenly a big blurb appears out of know where. The big blurb snacked me up and took me away from the path until I couldn't see it. I was furious, after all of that. I tried to get out of the blurbs firm grip. After the blurb had stopped running he through me on the ground. I was mad as I got out my compass to lead me to the crystals. The blurb said, " Hey, where are you going." "to find the crystals to cure polio."I shout over my shoulder but I really don't think he can hear me because I am running away.
Next thing I new I could see the path and I was on my way to the cave to find the crystal juice. I was jumping up and down as I followed the path. While I was jumping like a kangaroo I thought, "this is funny because people sometimes say follow a path. It is like follow the leader."

Edited piece: Smells of peppermint waft everywhere, fresh, fresh. My nose whifts up the smell of peppermint. Smell isn't the only thing that is absolutely pleasing around here. While big tall trees make a bridge over the top of me, I feel a surge of pleasure rushing through my body.  I looked to the right and see a muddy dirt path. It has a mix of stones and mud. Mud, slimy, slimy, mud. These words ring through my head like a race car. That is the bike track that I use for sleading in the winter. It looks very different at this time of year.

Evaluation
How has your writing has improved this term? Yes because I have tried to improve my goal and everything else that Suzanne has said to improve.

The part of my story I am most proud of is….because…Smells of peppermint waft everywhere, fresh, fresh. My nose whifts up the smell of peppermint. Smell isn't the only thing that is absolutely pleasing around here. Because it is like a song how it doesn't stop at each sentence and move onto a totally different thing.

Next time, what is a goal you can work towards? I can work on adding more of my goal into my writing.

Feedback/Feedforward: I think that you have put imagery in my head, you are really good at building suspense. The thing I think you need to work on is putting more similes to put more imagery for the reader.

My End Of Term Reflection

My end of term reflection

What is an effective learner? I think an effective learner is someone who gets on with their work and does not disturb anyone's learning.

What were the highlights for this term? Why? Grasshopper Tennis because you can get out their, have a go and also get fit.

What were your greatest challenges this term? Why? CMIYC because you had to pass the ball really quick if you didn't want to get touched by the other team.

How are you going towards acting with integrity? Why? How could you improve? I picked up someone else's pen but I could improve by picking up my own pen because sometimes I leave it on the ground.
What are your goals in our learner disposition wall? Where to next?  I am on self-managing and I think my goal for this hole year is to be ready for the day as soon as the bell goes. I am aiming for self-directed because a think it is time for me to step up and strive for excellence.

Writing Sample

WALT: information

DESCRIPTION: Write an explanation about something you have learned about energy.

What? We are publishing a piece of writing.
Why?, To share on our blog and during our Student Led Conference.
When? Week 6
Who? The World

Re crafted:

Published:
Matter
What is matter?
Matter is tiny little dots that you can't see and can't hear.
Matter is three different stats and the are solid, liquid and gas.
If you grabbed ice it would be a solid because it has came out of a cold icy freezer, do you know what a solid is?
A solid is when particles are really, really jam tight together.
But then if you added heat energy to the ice it would slowly start to melt because of the warmth.
Once it is a liquid it's water but that is also when the particles have a bit more room to move in.
Then when the liquid has evaporated that is when the liquid turns into gas.

Kinetic and Potential Energy
Kinetic is movement.
Kinetic can be shown when you grab a jar and have a long bit of beads all joined together and leave the end out that shows no movement.
When you pull the end of the beads then it will move and show movement.
That is kinetic energy.

Potential is stored energy inside something.
Everything has potential.
Different objects have different amount of potential energy.
Like for instance if you grabbed a tennis ball and a basketball which ball would Bounce for the longest?
The basketball because it can hold more potential energy because the basketball can bounce more higher.

Heat and temperature are not the same.
Do you know that heat energy is just trying to become the same temperature as the room or the place that they are in. Did you know that hot and cold are called thermal energy. The more hot that something might get the more thermal energy it has.
Do you know why we call thing hot and cold all the time?
It's because of our body temperature.
For example, if you grabbed three cus and filled one with cold water and another hot.
Then you grab a third cup and put room temperature water.
Then put one finger into the cold and one finger in the hot.
Hold them in the water for 30 seconds.
Then you take both of your fingers out and put both fingers into the room temperature water.
You should feel like they are on fire.Thermometer
People use a thermometer to tell what temperature something is.
If you take the thermometer outside on a cold, cold day the atoms would start to slow down and feel sleepy It would show a lower reading but if it was a warm day the would get exited and be moving faster, they would be raising up the tempture of the thermometer. It would make the thermometer show a higher and hotter reading

Evaluation: I think that I did well with my story but I could add in some adjectivals.
Feedback/feedford:wow Amy that is a great story next time you could use a bit more of your vocabulary

Integrity Sample

WALT: communicate a message with others.
WALT: show integrity.

What? Make a Puppet Pal to show our understanding of integrity.
Why? To show what we know about integrity, to share during our Student Led Conference.
When? Term 2, Week 1 - 7
Who? The World
Feedback/feedforward: I think you have shown in that video you know what integrity looks like. Keep up the good work. Rosalind:)
Evaluation: I think that I did a great job with everything. But I could make sure I knew about integrity a bit more because I did not get our video right the three times wi tried with my group. But I think that I should be in the orange because I could have made sure I knew what I was going to say and do the first time.
WALT: communicate a message with others.

●  Create a story board showing the beginning, middle and end of our message.  I think that I did well because our message was clear.
  • ●  Use Puppet Pals as a tool to share our message. I think that we did that one really well because we used the right puppet pals and we had no delay.

  • ●  Keep our audience engaged. I think we did well with this one too because we added in a funny part and that got more people listening to our video.

  • WALT: show integrity.
    • ●  Everyone in our group has contributed evenly. I think that we all made an awesome team work and I think that because of that we all contributed evenly.

    • ●  Integrity is the main theme of our message. I think that we made sure we got our message threw but next time we could have made us integrity was the main message the first time.

Learning

Learning means everything to a learner. Learning is important. If you didn't learn then you would always be the same, a non learning kid, then when you grow up you wouldn't be important to people because they will think that you are dum.
                             Important please read below.
But I don't think that you are dum if you don't learn because I read a book about a boy and that he was different and everyone said that they didn't like him because of his face but here is what I learnt from the story: Don't judge a boy by his face. I learnt something else from that morel too it is: Don't judge a person at all, from its disabilities or it's personalities, get to know the person first then once you know him well and if he is mean to you then just walk away. Don't do something mean back because others can follow from older people so be the older person and mayde one day you can tell that to your childreen and say never do that to someone else.

WALT:Evaluate on our learning

I think that I am a Self Managing learner because I can stay on task most of the time.

Time:I use my time appropriately by not talking and getting on with my work.

Choices:I make good choices about where I choose to work and who I work next to.

To be able to move to being a Self Directed learner I must stay on task independently.

Time: I will fill in my timetable in the time given

Choices: I will make good choices like sitting next to someone who is not a blocker to me

This is what I am going to do to move to being a self directed learner: make good choices of where I sit.

Stats Sharp Shooting

Statistics

WALT:calculate the mean, median, mode and range for a set of data.
Success criteria:
Find out
Remember our scores
Reflection:I think I did well to remember my scores and everyone else's scores.

TASK Elly and Troy want to find out once and for all:
which Activity Group has the overall best score, (mean)
which Activity Group has the highest middle number, (median)
what score was the most common, (mode)
which activity group has the highest range. (range)

In everyday life people collect data to look for trends and make decisions. In order to analyse the information, we need to understand the different ways to lOOK at the data.

Success Criteria you will know you are successful when:
calculate the mean by adding up all the data (9 + 4 + 4 + 5 + 8 = 30) then divide the total by how many numbers there were (9, 4, 4, 5, 8 = 5 numbers so 30 ÷ 5 = 6).
calculate the median by ordering all numbers from smallest to biggest then selecting the middle number (4, 4, 5, 8, 9 = 5 is the middle number). If there are 6 numbers e.g. 4, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, then the median is halfway = 5.5.
calculate the mode by identifying which number occurs most often (4, 4, 5, 8, 9 = 4 because there are two of them). You can have more than one mode.
calculate the range by finding the difference between the highest and lowest numbers (9 - 4 = 5).

Chiclewaddle diddlewaddle doo

Walt: use rhyme patterns affectively.
We listened to a poem called a Chiddlewaddle Diddlewaddle doo. It was a funny poem. Then once we had listened to the poem we made a poem just like the Chiddlewaddle Didlewaddle doo poem. Here is my poem.

Chiddlewaddle Didlewaddle doo!

Run run, on a yummy raspberry bun,
Look look, through a big cook book,
Glue glue, a piece of stew,
Chiddlewaddle Diddlewaddle doo,
Drink drink, a glass of pink ink,
Cluck cluck, I said a yellow duck,
Climb climb, while doing a naughty crime,
Chiddlewaddle Diddlewaddle doo,
Play play,I'm having a wonderful day,
Rhyme rhyme, with very sticky slime,
Draw draw, with a colourful crayon claw,
Chiddlewaddle Diddlewaddle
Chiddlewaddle Diddlewaddle
Chiddlewaddle Diddlewaddle doo!

Camp Goals

                                          Camp Goals!
WALT: set SMART goals
Success Criteria:
Set 2 goals that are sensible, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely goals
Reflect on goals after camp
I did great with setting 2 goals that are sensible and achievable.

I achieved both of my goals really well. Goal 1 for me was really scary because there are wetas and I don't like wetas.

Mt second goal was a bit hard because we were always talking to each other and it was hard to get one persons attention when you've got 7 other people talking.

Goal 1: My goal is to overcome my fear of caving.
I have chosen this goal because I don't want to be scared of caving.
I'll know I have achieved this goal when I go caving at Highland Home and discover what it is like. I can help myself achieve this goal by going caving and focusing on my goal while I am caving.

Goal 2: My goal is to work well with others.
I have chosen those goal because I want to work well with others and not have a fight.
I'll know I have achieved this when I have worked well with other people.
I can help myself achieve this goal by getting to know others better and by being kind and caring!

Nearly 40 people in Auckland have recently been diagnosed with the infectious measles disease.
Westlake Boys High School on Aucklands North Shore is one of the hardest hit communities with 20 ill students.
Several other Westlake Boys High pupils who have not been immunised against measles have been asked to stay away for the next two weeks.
Measles is a very serious disease that is highly contagious and can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
The symptoms include fever, a cough, sore eyes and a rash. There is no treatment, and complications can be severe.
The Auckland Health Service has estimated that around 750 people are at immediate risk of catching the highly contagious disease.
Dr. Julia Peters said the Health Service had been working with the North Shore school for just over a week when the first case of measles was found there.
"This is definitely more than what we'd normally see. We're working hard to contain the measles within the Auckland region."
Dr. Peters said many people who had come down with the disease had recently been overseas and, in particular, in the Philippines.
The public health service has sent information to parents and students at Westlake Boys High and asked that those students who are not sure whether they have been immunised against measles to stay away.
"What we're trying to do is isolate those students as well as those who have measles, because students who are not immunised can get sick," she said.
Another seven cases of measles in Auckland are being investigated - three of them from the same school.
What to watch for Symptoms
* High fever.

Vocabulary

In our workshop we learnt about vocabulary. We got to choose how we got better with our vocabulary    and what we did to get better. This is how I did it. First I stuck all of the words into my book. Then I grabbed 6 colour pencils. What I did next was I sounded out the words and then I did salables to improve my vocabulary. Then I colored in the words what ever colour the salables were. Then I posted it on my blog
